THE BOROUGH GREEN QUARRY TRAILS
After closing in 1969 and lying untouched for more than 55 years, the old disused Borough Green Quarry is about to be transformed into a gently sculpted mix of mountain bike trails and woodland walking paths, offering something special for riders and walkers of all ages. This project has been made possible thanks to the huge support of Mike Taylor and the local parish council, with Tony Byrne leading the design and layout. Tony, a passionate cyclist with over three decades of experience in both the mountain biking community and landscape design, is well known in the area for his ability to weave nature into trails and woodland layouts. Having spent years refining the craft of shaping paths into unforgettable experiences, he now brings his expertise and enthusiasm to Borough Green. The result will be a space for everyone who loves the outdoors, from children gaining confidence on their bikes to adults seeking woodland peace and fresh country air. With carefully built trails and meandering woodland walks that make the most of the quarry’s unique landscape, the new design promises a mix of flowing curves and tranquil pathways. By breathing new life into a forgotten piece of land, the project will create a thriving community hub of natural trails for cyclists and walkers alike.
The Old Quarry 1938
Below is a picture taken in the 1920s from the south looking at the Isles Quarry as shown in the 1938 map. In those days, whilst the stone was carted to the crusher by loco, it was still quarried and loaded by hand. Jim Allingham was the last known villager to have wielded a sledge hammer breaking rocks here. If you look carefully in the foreground you can see the end of the tramway, with a siding off to the left with a loco skip waiting to load.
